Sustainability

Sustainably minded

A Christmas market in the middle of Zurich should give something to the city, not just consume. That is why everything that stands, cooks and works on Werdmühleplatz follows three principles: short distances, durable materials and people who stay.

From the region onto the plate

Our market huts rely on producers from Zurich and the region. Distances are short, quality is high, and vegetarian and vegan dishes are a fixture. We make many ingredients ourselves and prepare them fresh every day. The punch comes from an organic manufactory; the raclette and grilled specialities are from Zurich. And because sustainability matters to us down to the last potato: even the raclette potatoes grow on Markus Götsch's organic Waidhof farm in Zurich. One collaboration is particularly close to our hearts: for many years our mulled wine has been made by the team of the Zurich Epilepsy Centre with the EPI Park restaurant, just four kilometres from the market. The partnership makes a social contribution – and it tastes great too: in 2015 the Tages-Anzeiger named our mulled wine the best in Zurich. It is still brewed to the same recipe today.

Built for the future

The wooden huts, the fondue chalet and the shelters are no throwaway infrastructure. Our long-standing friends and partners Robin and Roger Diethelm hand-built them in Switzerland from Swiss wood. Year after year we put up the same structures again. The decoration follows the same principle: our decorator Marlis has been designing the market for many years, reusing the materials again and again.

People who stay

Many of our employees have been returning to us every Advent for years. This family atmosphere is no coincidence: we stick together, support each other and are committed to inclusion. That way the Singing Christmas Tree remains what it has always been: a house of tradition, carried by the people who make it possible.
